Shawnee Resort Dam Replacement, Monroe County, Pennsylvania
Overview: The Pocono-based Shawnee Resort in Monroe County, Pennsylvania planned to upgrade and improve a scenic pond in front of their operations by replacing a breached, degraded, maintenance-intensive earth dam with a reinforced concrete cantilever-type dam. GeoStructures was retained to provide subsurface characterization and to develop geotechnical criteria for the design and construction of the replacement dam.

The completed replacement structure has a maximum height of approximately 10 ft and includes a concrete cutoff trench. During the design phase of the project, GeoStructures explored the subsurface conditions along the new dam’s alignment and developed geotechnical criteria for design and construction.
An essential element of our work was the design of a concrete cutoff trench extending a minimum of 6 inches below footing level into highly weathered sandstone. This innovative approach was used to address the issue of seepage through highly stratified alluvial and glacial deposits. In addition to controlling seepage, the cut-off trench also provides sliding resistance and stability for the dam.
