Landfills, Ponds, and Lagoons

Service Overview

GeoStructures has been actively working on all aspects of landfill, pond, and lagoon projects for more than 10 years. Our work includes slope stability, retaining walls, and liquefaction hazard analyses– the latter of which is assessed using traditional semi-empirical methods, as well as 2-D dynamic finite element method (FEM) analysis.

In the dynamic FEM analysis, selected ground motions are simulated, thus resulting in dynamic stresses and strains that are utilized as inputs for a dynamic FEM slope stability analysis. The factor of safety is then analyzed at each time step in an earthquake record to study the resulting deformation of the slope above the zone of liquefaction.

GeoStructures also offers design and inspection of liner systems for wastewater lagoons and ponds of all types. Such services require expertise in geosynthetic materials, drainage problems, and other geotechnical issues. Factors considered by GeoStructures to select the optimal liner include end use, geologic setting, water level fluctuations, reactive chemical effluent, uplift, vegetation, and risk of karst-related dropouts. Regardless of type, however, attention to detail is critical, with anchor trenches, field seaming, curtain drains, and pipe penetrations playing major roles in long-term performance.

Service Offerings

Slope Stability

Conduct analyses to ensure the stability of slopes in landfills, ponds, and lagoons using methods like 2-D dynamic FEM.

Retaining Walls

Design and evaluates retaining walls to support landfill structures and prevent soil movement.

Liquefaction Hazard Analyses

Assess liquefaction risks using traditional semi-empirical methods and dynamic FEM analysis.
