Soil Improvement Techniques

Options for large-scale, in-place densification of granular soils include, on one hand, intensive proof-rolling, dynamic compaction, and other densification/compaction techniques. Post-construction settlement of soft, saturated silt and clay deposits, on the other hand, can be mitigated through preloading. For marginal sites, a combination of methods may be the best approach. Lightweight fills can also be used to actually offset structural loads and essentially “float” a building.
