Slope and Retaining Wall Evaluation and Design

Service Overview

According to the National Landslide Hazards Program (NLHP) administered by the USGS, landslides constitute a major geologic hazard because they are widespread and can be quite severe. They occur in all 50 states and U.S. territories and cause an average of $1 to $2 billion in damages each year. GeoStructures is experienced in the design, evaluation, and rehabilitation of a full range of earth/rock slopes and retaining systems for transportation facilities, commercial sites, and residential developments. In addition to competency in traditional limit-equilibrium analysis, our strength in soil-structure interaction modeling and use of the finite element method (FEM) enables us to gain a deeper understanding of complicated slopes and earth retaining systems.

In the area of retaining systems, our engineers were among the first in Pennsylvania (late 1980s) to design geogrid-reinforced retaining walls— structures commonly referred to today as Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls or Segmental Retaining Walls (SRW).

Service Offerings

Geogrid-Reinforced Retaining Walls

Design geogrid-reinforced retaining walls and steep slopes (1H:1V or steeper) for stability and support.

Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Walls

Specialize in MSE walls, incorporating geosynthetic reinforcements for robust retaining systems.

Soil Nailing and Anchors

Utilize soil nailing and anchoring techniques to stabilize steep slopes and retaining walls.

Concrete Retaining Walls

Design gravity and cantilever concrete walls for structural support in various applications.

Erosion Control and Vegetative Mats

Implement erosion control using geosynthetic mats and vegetative solutions to prevent soil erosion.

Sheet Pile Walls

Design cantilever, braced, and tie-back sheet pile walls for effective earth retention.

Gabion and Boulder Walls

Provide aesthetic and functional solutions with gabion and boulder retaining walls.

Rock Cut Slopes

Stabilize rock cut slopes using specialized engineering techniques.

Coffer Dams

Construct coffer dams for temporary water diversion and excavation in wet environments.

Post and Panel Walls

Designs and install post and panel walls for various structural and aesthetic applications.
