Instrumentation and Special Testing
Service Overview
GeoStructures designed and installed numerous geotechnical and structural instrumentations for buildings, railroad bridges, subway tunnels, railroad tracks, and other structures. Our instrumentation plans comprise manual as well as automated systems with real-time measurements and reporting. Our various services incorporate inclinometers, telltales, piezometers, surface markers, settlement sensors, seismographs, and automated motorized total stations (AMTS).
GeoStructures has implemented its Surcharging Program and Instrumentation to numerous projects at the Philadelphia Navy Yard where settlement of the thick, soft, Delaware River silt deposits poses particular geotechnical concerns. As part of this program, GeoStructures first installs electronic settlement and pore water pressure sensors across the site. Surcharge fill is then preloaded over the site and left to settle for up to 6 months or more. Once the instrumentation confirms that the primary and secondary consolidation settlements have been achieved, surcharge is cut back and building construction can begin.
Inclinometers
Install and monitor inclinometers to measure lateral ground movement, providing critical data for slope stability and excavation safety.
Telltales
Use telltales to monitor the movement and deformation of structures, helping identify and mitigate potential structural issues.
Piezometers
Implement piezometers to measure pore water pressure in soils and rocks, essential for groundwater studies and stability analysis.
Surface Markers
Deploy surface markers to track settlement and displacement over time, ensuring accurate monitoring of surface deformations.
Settlement Sensors
Install settlement sensors to measure vertical displacement, aiding in the assessment of foundation and ground performance.
Seismographs
Use seismographs to record ground vibrations and seismic activity, crucial for evaluating structural responses to dynamic loads.
Automated Motorized Total Stations (AMTS)
Utilize AMTS for precise, real-time monitoring of structural movements and deformations, ensuring continuous data collection and reporting.
Surcharge Programs
Conduct surcharge programs by adding heavy ground loads to increase the rate at which underlying soil is consolidated.
Electronic Settlement and Pore Water Pressure Sensors
Install electronic sensors for detailed monitoring of settlement and pore water pressure, critical for projects with significant geotechnical concerns.
